Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the Honor Society Process (Updated 6/30/2016)

Notification letters regarding Honor Society Scholarship Eligibility will be e-mailed to students and parents the week on July 1, 2016. Students and Parents must make sure their NAVIANCE e-mail account is up-to-date as this is our communication method.

-In order to be academically (scholarship) eligible for the National Honor Society, students must meet the following criteria:
  • an unweighted or weighted GPA of 3.630 AND
  • a simple numerical average of 91.0
-Students are notified regarding their academic (scholarship) eligibility after the completion of their fourth and/or sixth semesters at Newtown High School. Transfer students must complete at least one semester at Newtown High School.

- In the notification letter of academic (scholarship) eligibility the student will be able to attend an informational meeting where they can learn more information about completing the National Honor Society Informational Packet.

- The advisor, does not determine who is offered membership into the National Honor Society. A double blind process is used with the faculty council. No, parents and students CAN NOT know which teachers are on the faculty council. This is for the fidelity and integrity of the process.

-Students must demonstrate a total of 75 hours of service, with at least 15 hours directly benefiting NHS within the previous 12 months. The candidate may also meet this requirement by completing a minimum of 90 hours of service to either school or community, at the time the informational packet is submitted
