Honor Society Members: Important Update!

Hey everyone!

Hope you are having a great week so far!  This is just an update for
all members, who all should be receiving this email.  If you know of
somebody who hasn't received emails, tell them to contact this email
(nhsnewtown@gmail.com) as soon as possible.  It is absolutely crucial
that we have full communication with all members.

As you may of noticed, google documents are a pretty huge part to the
organization of Honor Society, and it is super important that you have
access to them, to sign up for things like committees as we start to
define the membership requirements this year!  If you have trouble
accessing any google document, don't hesitate to contact this email!
The link for the committee signup is:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/13fM3lEel2IyBh9WCtCIB-UTfr1-MyrurU8b_tpcyklc/edit

As you may have noticed, you may now be placed into a different
committee that you originally signed up for.  We had to redistribute
some members to other committees, because of the sheer number of new
members!  BUT REMEMBER, just because you have not officially a part of
a specific committee does not mean that you can't attend their events!
Every NHS event is open to all members!

Sorry for totally bogging everyone down with this info, have a great night!

Leadership

This was originally posted on the NHS Blog:

The National Honor Society (NHS) is the premier service organization, which is based upon a student’s exemplary performances in the areas of: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. These areas are known as the pillars of the organization. Students will be notified after the completion of their fourth semester and/or sixth semester regarding eligibility for the National Honor Society. This posting will explain more about the area of Leadership
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school and/or community activities while working with or for others. The Newtown Chapter of the National Honor Society By-Laws defines Leadership as Each candidate shall demonstrate leadership by active membership in at least two organizations, one of which is affiliated with Newtown High School, in which the candidate has led others to a clear goal or objective. Students at Newtown High School demonstrate leadership abilities in numerous ways. The National Honor Society realizes questions may arise regarding Leadership throughout the course of the school-year. If students have specific questions regarding Leadership they may contact the Faculty Advisor (Mr. Brant) or they may e-mail the Officers at nhsnewtown@gmail.com.

National Honor Society: Service

(Please note this blog posting originally appeared on the NHS Blog located at: http://dumais.us/newtown/blog/?p=16902#more-16902)
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the premier service organization, which is based upon a student’s exemplary performances in the areas of: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. These areas are known as the pillars of the organization. Students will be notified after the completion of their fourth semester and/or sixth semester regarding eligibility for the National Honor Society. This posting will explain more about the area of Service
Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. The Newtown High School National Honor Society By-Laws (January 2011) defines service as the following: “Each candidate shall demonstrate service to school and community by participating in events or activities whose primary purpose is to benefit others. A total of 75 hours per year, with no fewer than 15 hours of service to school each year. At least one service activity must have been done directly through Newtown High School or as part of a club or organization at NHS. All service hours must be completed during the candidate’s high school tenure and must be documented and verified by the sponsor. Service is defined as a positive, non-self-serving contribution to the welfare of others. Activities for which a candidate received a grade or credit in a class, received monetary or other remuneration, or was part of a fundraising activity designed to directly benefit the candidate, among other things, are not considered service. Service to school would not include any school clubs or organizations whose primary function is other than service, unless there is clear evidence that the organization has participated in an activity with the express purpose of providing service to school.”
All service hours must be documented and have an adult who can verify the hours that are reported. The Honor Society is aware that questions arise throughout the school-year regarding service hours. Any student who has questions regarding service may contact the faculty Adviser (Mr. Brant) or the Honor Society officers at nhsnewtown@gmail.com.
